Detailed introduction
Yeongdo Bridge is the only monocular bascule bridge remaining in Korea. In addition, unlike other ordinary bascule bridges, there is a unique feature in this type of bascule bridge, such as the installation of an opening device on the quay wall. There is no precedent in Korean bridge history (civil engineering), so it is very important to study this modern bridge history and note its heritage value.
Yeongdo Bridge has been associated with Busan citizens since the Japanese colonial rule. It was a place where refugees who were tired of their lives after 8.15 liberation and the Korean War had comforted one another, celebrated their joys, and shared their sorrows and homesickness. At the time of the war, the Yeongdo Bridge area was filled with refugees. It is a structure that has been associated with the modern history of Korea and it is a bridge that represents a strong modern Busan symbolically.
The construction of the Bridge was an important project in the development of the modern city of Busan with the expansion of the Busan port logistics hub and the opening of the main road. In particular, Yeongdo is an important historical site in that it is ”ground zero” of this city’s growth, through the construction of Yeongdo Bridge, which connects the downtown with the land route and the opening of the tram.
